From Grant to Gathering Place: Dederang’s Outdoor Kitchen

In 2016, Dederang Primary School received a Community Grant funded by the Gardiner Foundation to develop an outdoor kitchen.

Today, the kitchen is at the heart of the school and community, a space where kids learn, cook, and tell stories, and where the wider community gathers for special events like Mother’s Day, NAIDOC Week and Landcare incursions.

Christina Torio, Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader at Dederang, says the project has gone beyond just building a kitchen.

“It’s given the kids a space to share, to learn, and to connect. You can see that sense of belonging in their smiles.”

The kitchen is now a place where children design the menu, help prepare meals, and serve their classmates, building confidence and creating lasting memories along the way.
