Accelerating genetic innovation in dairy herds and pastures.
DairyBio is a long-term joint venture between Dairy Australia, Gardiner Foundation, and Agriculture Victoria, focused on cutting-edge research to improve herd and forage genetics—driving animal health, productivity and farm profitability.
Animal Genetics
Delivered in collaboration with DataGene, herd research is helping farmers identify the genetic merit of cows and bulls more accurately, leading to stronger breeding outcomes. This work has contributed to national genetic gain and a sharp rise in genomic testing, with over 90,000 calves tested in 2022–23.
Forages
DairyBio’s forage research targets improvements in pasture yield, persistence and quality. A key outcome is the release of Samurye, a hybrid ryegrass species offering higher yields and improved pest resistance for Australian dairy farmers.
This joint investment is helping future-proof the industry through science-led innovation in genetics and farm performance.
